The castle itself was built over 450 years ago by Henry VIII as one of a series of coastal defence batteries to protect England from the aggressive forces of the Spanish and French. Its history as a wartime defensive facility continued as it was used in the first world war as a guard post and an observation post in the second world war. It was also a major stronghold for the royalist forces in the English civil war and that fact cements this castle in the history books!
Today, the castle is maintained by English Heritage with a wide range of facilities including a new interactive exhibition and hospitality suite that can cater for up to 100 including a fully equipped commercial kitchen with many weddings already having taken place at one of Cornwall’s newest and most picturesque wedding venues. The room where cival wedding cermonies take place is a very challenging location. It is very dark, usually lit with one small window and a selection of candles this can present many photographers with a problem.
