St Mawes Castle is the smaller sister to Pendennis Castle overlooking the Fal Estuary and built by Henry VIII as part of a chain of castles designed to protect the South and South West coasts of England against Spanish and French naval attacks. It might be a smaller castle that really failed in its only major aggressive event, but it does offer some of the most amazing and spectacular views of any wedding venue. As a result, wedding photography at St Mawes Castle near Falmouth is always spectacular. The castle has outstanding wide ocean views, inland towards Falmouth and of Pendennis Castle. However, the impressive preservation of this maritime legacy is it’s best asset. It was probably the most intricately decorated coastal defence castle and has a host of incredibly important architectural features that have been preserved for the future by English Heritage. These important architectural features are what makes St Mawes stand out as a wedding venue and it is to the credit of English Heritage, that the venue has been so well preserved.
The scenery around St Mawes is awe inspiring in line with the Pendennis Castle and offers some amazing opportunities for wedding photography. Both internal and external shots that encapsulate the castle itself and the surrounding natural beauty abound but it is the skill and sometimes patience of the photographer that is required to really get the best shots at this wedding venue. The Cornish coastline always offers a dramatic backdrop to any type of photography whatever the weather, sometimes inclement weather improves the shot itself although we would never wish this on any wedding. Internally, the intricate decorations and wood carvings also make wedding photography a pleasure and dramatic and unique pictures can be gained from the gun platforms that make this Falmouth wedding venue just one of a kind.
